Backup and sync

MetaMask allows you to backup and sync your accounts across two or more devices that have the same Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). Available on Extension and Mobile.

The feature ensures that your account names and contacts remain consistent across devices. This also allows you to restore accounts on separate devices without manually adding them again.

Backup and sync is enabled by default for all users. You can manage this in Settings > Backup and sync.

MetaMask contact sync
note
  • Only accounts and contacts originating from your default Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) will be synchronized, not imported SRPs.
  • Any accounts and contacts imported using private keys, JSON, or hardware wallets do not sync yet.

How does backup and sync work?

  • If one device has more accounts or contacts than the other, MetaMask will automatically sync all of the accounts and contacts and add the missing ones to the other device(s), so you don’t need to manually import them.
  • For account names and contacts, the most recent update is always prioritized. If there are two competing account names for the same address, whichever was renamed the latest will be chosen and synced across devices.
  • If it’s unclear which account name was updated last, MetaMask will keep different account names. If you don’t see previously edited account names synchronizing, just update the account name again, and it will be reflected across devices.

When does backup and sync happen?

For any wallet instances where this feature is enabled it occurs when:

  • You lock or unlock the MetaMask extension or mobile app
  • You close or open the MetaMask extension or mobile app

This means that if you make changes on Device A (like adding a new account or renaming one), you won't see the changes reflected on Device B until you either lock/unlock or close/open MetaMask on Device B.

Does ‘Backup and sync’ preserve my privacy?

Your accounts and contacts are backed up and synced without compromising the confidentiality of your data. MetaMask encrypts your data locally on your device before it interacts with the server on which your data is stored and relayed. That way, MetaMask has no visibility into which users or addresses are using ‘Backup and sync’. For more information, refer to our privacy policy outlined here.

How can I opt out?

If you prefer not to use ‘Backup and sync,’ you can opt-out at any time in Settings. MetaMask will continue to function normally and you can opt back into the functionality anytime.

Questions

Do I need to enable this on every device or just one?

You just need this enabled once on one device for your data to be synced across multiple devices storing the same SRP(s).

What type of data is stored?

We store account and contact data like:

  • Account names
  • How many accounts you generate
  • Contact names
  • Contact memos
  • Contact addresses
  • Network IDs (chain IDs)
  • Last updated timestamps

We don’t store, transfer, or backup your private key or SRP, both of which remain accessible and visible only to you.

Is my data deleted if I opt-out?

Yes, it will be deleted. You can re-enable this feature anytime within Settings > ‘Backup and sync.’

Your local contacts will remain unchanged.

When you re-enable the feature:

  • If you have local contacts, they will be synced to remote storage
  • If you have no local contacts, any contacts stored by other devices will be downloaded

What happens if I delete a contact?

When you delete a contact on one device, the deletion will be synced to all other devices at the next sync. The contact will be removed from all devices using the same SRP.
